International Standards

Vernon CMS is fully compliant with international standards. Three years were spent researching and developing the system before it was launched on the market. The resulting design is based on the best sources of research in museum data structure and procedures.

The database design is a relational implementation of the Museum Documentation Association (mda) SPECTRUM data standard used by hundreds of museums throughout the world. Its detail and logical structure is compatible with CHIN, AASLH Common Agenda and CIDOC standards.

CHIN Accredited Procedural standards have traditionally been more diverse and dynamic than data standards and, therefore, less well-defined. These are now evolving, with the mda SPECTRUM Documentation Standard being widely recognised as a leading procedural authority. Publications of professional Registrars' groups in the USA, Europe and Australasia are also defining guidelines for museum procedures. Vernon CMS draws upon all these sources, and its unique Procedural Control tool allows these standards to be implemented and updated with ease.
