Hardware Specifications
Vernon runs on PCs as a standalone workstation or connected to a network.
Following is the minimum hardware configuration to achieve a good level of performance.
Hardware technologies are rapidly changing and these specifications will vary as the available technologies become more powerful and affordable. Please consult Vernon Systems for their current recommendations.
Vernon Systems will be pleased to review existing hardware, assist with planning a hardware environment, or review proposals from hardware vendors.
- Workstation Minimum
- Pentium III
- 128MB RAM
- CD ROM Drive
- Windows NT/2000/XP
It is NOT suggested that any site purchase equipment based on minimum specifications. These are given only as a gauge against which to assess the suitability of existing equipment. If you are purchasing new equipment, we recommend purchasing the best available hardware within your budget.
Hard disk space required by the application is approximately 200 MB plus whatever storage is needed for data. For indicative disk sizing we suggest allowing between 2500 and 4000 bytes per object. This depends on the level of detail to be recorded but is inclusive of indexing and authority file overheads.
Local & Wide Area Networks
Vernon runs on NT and Novell 6. On these networks the Revelation Universal Driver server software is used to perform some of the processing on the server. This reduces network traffic and improves speed and integrity.
On wide area networks (WANs) Vernon runs with Windows Terminal Services and Citrix.
System Software
Vernon has been built using OpenInsight for Workgroups (OI), which is Revelation Software's Windows successor to Advanced Revelation (ARev). Revelation Technologies Inc. is a New Jersey (USA)-based company. There are more than a million users of Revelation products worldwide, running thousands of applications.
The Vernon client can be run under Windows 98SE, NT, 2000 or XP. Other clients are supported using Citrix.
Imaging System
The imaging system supports a great variety of graphic file formats (BMP, DXF, EPS, FPX, GIF, IMG, JPEG, PCD, PCX, PNG, TGA, TIFF, WMF, WPG). In addition, Vernon includes integrated multimedia facilities for sound and full motion video (AVI, MID, WAV and MPEG).
All that is required to use the imaging system is to load the digital image file to your hard disk (or insert a photo CD containing the image file), and enter its location (i.e. its DOS filename) in the photography fields of the subject record (object, person, or activity, such as exhibition venue, conservation treatment or condition report). The image can then be displayed with record or invoked via a button from any window displaying that subject's data.
Display options include overlaying the image onto the text screen, enlarging or reducing the size of the image, repositioning it within the window, and panning around the details of an image which has been enlarged beyond screen size.
Images can be printed on laser or inkjet printers, and colour images can be printed using various colour printers.
